If we were to ask four people what the difference is between a goal, objective strategy and tactic, we would probably receive four different answers. When it comes to creating public relations and social media plans for clients, our team always makes it a point to explain our view on what a goal, objective, strategy and tactic is. Some may disagree, but we like to think that we are pretty spot on. Take a look at our definition and let us know your thoughts.
A goal is something you are ALWAYS striving toward. It is the one component of the plan that we may never fully achieve but are always striving for. An example of this would be “We want to make The Burnette Agency the choice social media and public relations firm for all consumer products in the southeast.”
Objectives are going to be the measurable part of the plan. For example, The Burnette Agency wants to increase client retention by 25%. Or The Burnette Agency wants to acquire 5 new clients before the end of 2015.
Strategies are the what. What are you trying to accomplish? An example: Build strong relationships with business owners in the community through community outreach. Or, connect with reporters and bloggers to generate a strong relationship for future clients that may fit their particular beat or topic. The strategy is what you are trying to attain so that you can reach your goal.
The Tactics are how you are going to achieve the strategy. In order to build strong community relationships we would create a list of charities, choose a cause that is dear to our hearts, offer our services and build rapport in the community in an effort to build brand awareness and cultivate strong relationships.
Creating plans is not easy but making sure everyone is on the same page is imperative to creating success. Make sure that you clearly define and understand the definition of a goal, objective, strategy and tactic before executing a plan!
