Do you feel like you can never keep up with the coolest lingo and social media trends? Whether it be the latest viral video or celeb scandal, you want to be informed on all the jokes and memes. Nothing is worse than someone referencing a hilarious trending topic and you have to ask the entirety of the details.
Snapchat is known for it’s younger user audience. Each month Snapchat releases it’s “Snap Chatter” reports and they cover anything and everything trending on the platform for the month. This includes general and global trending topics, entertainment, celebrities, and trending slang. Basically, it includes just enough to keep you in the loop of what’s going on with the younger crowd.
Snap Chatter began May 2018 to give a glimpse into what Snapchatters all over the world are sharing. On average, over 191 million people use Snapchat every day to Snap with friends and catch up on what’s going on around the world. Across the globe, Snapchatters use the app to celebrate major holidays, graduations, and of course all of the national holidays.
So what’s been trending in the United States?
Baseball: Phillie’s right fielder Bryce Harper was being trolled online after his former team, the Nationals, won their first World Series without him.
Music: People were talking about R&B singer Summer Walker releasing her debut studio album. Snapchatters were also buzzing about Kanye West’s new gospel album that was finally released after being pushed multiple times. Former One Direction singer Harry Styles dropped a new single “Lights Up”.
Slang: The phrase “vibe check” originated from memes. Often used in a joking way, Snapchatters use this as a warning drama might start soon or as way of gauging someone’s mood.
National Days: US Snapchatters love their National Days - This past month there was National Boyfriend Day, Girlfriend Day, and National Coming Out Day. National Taco Day was a huge hit with users on Snapchat simply snapping away their delicious Mexican food. Halloween was also a trending topic on Snapchat. From costumes to decor there were endless people using the app to celebrate this spooky day!
Be sure to check out the monthly Snap Chatter to stay up to date on what the “cool kids” are up to. It’s also really interesting to see what’s trending in other countries. I find Snapchat trends to be a good gauge on what a community is dealing with and helps one to stay informed on what the world is talking about. It can be easy to get trapped in the news bubble exclusively in the place where you live, but it’s important to know what others around the world are talking about, fighting for, and celebrating.
